Studying the link between the environment and neurodegenerative diseases through artificial intelligence. This is the goal of DREAM (Digital therapy and aRtificial IntElligence for patients Assistance and treatMent), the research project signed by Gpi with the Apulia Region to analyse the correlation between a territory’s environmental and climatic conditions and the onset and course of conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Gpi leads the initiative as lead partner, joined by Advice Pharma as project partner. The aim is to build predictive models capable of supporting early diagnosis and patient management. Work that falls under the One Health approach—the vision that considers human health and environmental health as parts of a single system, with data as a shared prevention tool.
“With DREAM, artificial intelligence applied to healthcare moves into a direction of research that increasingly integrates clinical, environmental, and climatic data,” explains Antonio Colangelo, R&D Director at Gpi. “If the patterns we are looking for are confirmed, the value of DREAM will extend beyond Apulia, offering a model that can be replicated anywhere and is capable of anticipating people’s healthcare needs.”
Where DREAM starts
It does not start from scratch. Gpi has already developed and validated a predictive analysis system that cross-references climatic and environmental data with A&E admissions and hospitalisations for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases at a major Italian healthcare provider. A model that today becomes the scientific foundation upon which DREAM is built.
