Border controls in the Schengen Area are evolving: the traditional passport stamp is being replaced by digital entry and exit registration. Malta has implemented the EES (Entry/Exit System), which digitally records the entries and exits of non-EU travelers through facial photos and fingerprints, speeding up controls and improving staff efficiency.
Gpi has developed the web services and applications that make this transformation possible, working alongside the Malta Police during the system’s launch last October at Malta International Airport. In just the first few weeks, the new system has already processed over 10,000 passports.
A digital ecosystem for European security
The solutions developed address various operational needs: from managing border registrations to real-time monitoring of cross-border movements by law enforcement, and identity verification of travelers by immigration authorities. Gpi has also handled the integration of a system that enables Maltese authorities to communicate with central European databases.
All solutions comply with European security and data protection standards, enabling fast and secure information exchange between Member States. This approach speeds up border crossing processes and enhances the experience for both travelers and authorities. The adoption of common standards makes the system replicable, paving the way for an increasingly integrated network of borders across Europe.
